My name is John Charles Ricker. I am an artist, writer, speaker, and thinker who lives in Minneapolis.
This blog will evolve as I explore this medium of expression, but I expect it will always contain my photography and art. Some of the art will be straightforward, but over half of it will play with one's perception.

I added a picture to itself and this was the result. The original picture is a long exposure of Christmas lights.
his is one of my favorite waterfalls. The interaction of the water and the rocks is striking. These falls are on Minnesota highway 61 and are part of Temperance River State Park.
I added two photos of graffiti on painted rusting metal together and this was the result.
When I came upon this trunk in Cascade River State Park, I stopped for a moment to stare at it. A fungus has completely taken over this trunk. The cracks in the bark are an eerie fungal white.
The twilight sky silhouetted this vulture beautifully. This photograph really shines in black and white.
The Brule river is one of my favorite rivers on the North Shore of lake superior. The colors of the rocks that line this river are beautiful.
The gulls at lake superior make excellent photo subjects. I learned more about high-speed and wildlife photography from them than I learned from any other source. When I realized that I had captured the shadow of this gulls beak on its wing I was overjoyed. Sometimes the best photographs are the ones where you capture something you didn’t even see before you released the shutter.
After a physics lab tour at Soudan Underground Mine State Park it took me a few minutes for my eyes to adjust to the sunlight again. When they did, this scene greeted me and I was in awe. The cliffs in this state park are beautiful. I look forward to when the Minnesota DNR finishes its work on Lake Vermillion State Park and combines it with this state park. The new park will be a compelling reason to visit Tower Minnesota, which is only two miles from the park.
The physics tour was interesting, but if you—like me—have been keeping up to date on cosmology, it’s a bit boring at times. The mine tour guides call the mine tour the “Indiana Jones Tour” and they call the physics lab tour the “James Bond Tour.” I think relating it to “James Bond” is a stretch, but it’s pretty amusing lingo nonetheless.

This dragonfly must have wanted its picture taken because it landed right in front of my camera and after I took its picture it landed on my hand.
